Car "Hacks" Every Driver Should Know

Car "Hacks" Every Driver Should Know

Owning and being able to drive a car is all about convenience, but sometimes the little annoyances - like icy windows, fuel consumption or messy interiors - can get in the way. Thankfully, we've put together a few clever hacks that can make your daily driving easier, more efficient and possibly more enjoyable.

1. Use a Card to De-Ice Your Windscreen in a Pinch

If you don't have a proper ice scraper to hand during frosty mornings, a sturdy bank card or any type of plastic card for that matter can be a great substitute, even if it's just your Tesco Clubcard! Hold the card at a slight angle and gently scrape away the ice from your windscreen and windows. This can be a great time-saver on those frosty mornings, which it seems like we're already getting in October!

2. Use Google Maps or a Parking App to Find Your Car Easily

We all have done it before, parking in large multi-storey car parks, such as the ones at shopping centres or train stations, can make finding your car quite the challenge when you come back to find it. Use Google Maps to drop a pin where you've parked before you leave the car park, or use a parking reminder app like "Find My Car". This makes it much easier to locate your car, even if you're in a hurry or in the dark.

3. Store Loose Change in an Empty Chewing Gum Container

The big chewing gum containers can be great to repurpose and use to store your loose change. Store all your change in one instead of throwing it away, it's much better than having it all rattle around in the doorcard and then not being able to find it when you get to the parking meter or toll booth.

4. Keep a Multi-USB Charging Cable in Your Car

With so many devices to keep charged nowadays, a multi-USB charging cable can be a lifesaver, especially on long journeys. A great product to use for this is SEAT's 3-in-1 cable.

5. Keep Windows Up at Higher Speeds

It may be nice for your dog, kids or even when you need a bit of fresh air, but at higher speeds (generally above 55mph), open windows can create a significant aerodynamic drag, which forces your engine to work harder and increases fuel consumption. Try using air conditioning instead of rolling down the windows at higher speeds for a more fuel-efficient drive.
