2025 New and Improved Volvo XC90

The new and improved Volvo XC90. The Volvo XC90 is an iconic SUV, now even better with a comprehensive range of technological and design enhancements both inside and out. As an award-winning, best-selling flagship hybrid SUV, the XC90 offers a premium seven-seater experience with comfort at its core.

The XC90’s new, more modern exterior design further enhances its confident appearance, signalling Volvo’s commitment to full electrification and incorporating design cues from their latest all-electric models.

However, the most significant updates are found inside. A refreshed interior boosts practicality and introduces Volvo’s latest user interface, similar to what’s found in the new EX90 and EX30 electric models. A larger, higher-resolution central touchscreen improves user interaction and offers a host of new features, apps, and the convenience of regular over-the-air software updates

The new XC90 exudes confidence, and why wouldn’t it? Our hybrid flagship has been one of our best-selling models for years and it’s still a favourite among many customers. Whether it’s comfort, space, luxury, versatility or hybrid efficiency you look for, the XC90 delivers on all accounts. Put together, the XC90 and its fully electric EX90 sibling provide customers with the options that suit them best and equip us with a balanced portfolio as we continue our transition towards full electrification.

Powertrain Expectations for the Volvo XC90

Renowned for being one of the safest vehicles on the road, the plug-in hybrid model also excels as an electric vehicle, providing over 43 miles (70 km) of pure electric range on a single charge, according to WLTP testing.

This extended electric range allows many drivers to complete their daily commutes with zero tailpipe emissions. In fact, the Volvo data indicates that nearly half of the distance travelled in the latest plug-in hybrid Volvo cars is driven on electric power alone.

For longer journeys, the XC90’s hybrid powertrain combines with an efficient petrol engine to deliver more than 800 km of extended range. Drivers can also choose the full combined power of both petrol and electric for continuous all-wheel drive or off-road adventures.

For customers who prefer a mild-hybrid option, Volvo offers two variants: the B5 and B6. Both are equipped with a 48-volt lithium-ion battery and an integrated starter/generator, which can help reduce emissions and fuel consumption by up to 15% in real-world driving.

A Well-Balanced Product Portfolio

Alongside the new range of fully electric vehicles, the plug-in hybrid XC90 T8 continues to be a popular choice among Volvo customers and plays a crucial role in the company’s sales and profitability. Together with their fully electric models, plug-in hybrids like the XC90 and its counterparts form a dynamic and balanced global product portfolio for Volvo Cars, serving as a strong bridge toward a fully electrified future.

This blend of fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles is the right approach for today’s market, as the premium electric vehicle segment continues to develop in several key regions. Plug-in hybrids remain essential to the manufacturer’s strategy for sales growth and profitability in the coming years.

Among the Safest Cars on the Road

Like every Volvo, the XC90 is designed to be one of the safest cars on the road. It features an advanced safety cage and a comprehensive array of active safety technologies to help protect you, your loved ones, and others around you.

With the use of radar and a front-facing camera, the XC90 can detect if you’ve unintentionally drifted into an oncoming lane and automatically steer you back to safety, reducing the risk of a head-on collision. It also helps prevent you from accidentally veering off the road. Additionally, the XC90 can utilise braking and steering assistance to avoid collisions with other vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, and large animals, including moose—one of Sweden’s native species.

Legendary Comfort Comes Standard

The XC90 offers an exceptional ride, featuring legendary seating comfort and enhanced suspension as standard. The vehicle’s suspension system now includes individual dampers that mechanically adapt to current road conditions, optimising both comfort and stability for a more confident and relaxed driving experience.

For those seeking the ultimate in-ride quality, the optional air suspension works with an active chassis that monitors the car, road, and driver 500 times per second, delivering the smoothest ride possible. Depending on your needs—whether easier access, improved aerodynamics at higher speeds, or additional ground clearance for rough terrain—the XC90 with air suspension can lower itself by 20mm or raise itself by 40mm. Volvo has also added extra insulation to specific areas of the vehicle to further reduce wind and road noise.

The refreshed interior showcases a redesigned cabin that embodies the best of modern Scandinavian design. The dashboard now has a more horizontal layout with decorative panels made from premium recycled materials, providing a more textured and refined finish, and is split by new vertical air vents. Enhanced ambient lighting adds an extra layer of luxury during nighttime driving.

Responding to feedback from current XC90 owners, Volvo has reconfigured the cabin to enhance practicality. The centre console now offers additional storage space, including a second cupholder, and the wireless phone charger has been repositioned behind the central tunnel, separate from the main storage area, for added convenience.

The XC90 can be equipped with the Bowers & Wilkins High Fidelity audio system, one of the finest in-car sound systems available, capable of replicating the acoustics of a stage, concert hall, or jazz club.

The new Volvo XC90 is available for order starting today. Production is set to begin in late 2024, with first customer deliveries expected by the end of the year.
